These
large hares were seen in nearly every
grassy field,
especially towards evening.
The
deer are very small - one of 35 lbs is
exceptionally large.
The buck on the right
has typical antlers, which look very
similar
to those on our pronghorn antelope.
(This
photo was taken at about 200 yards
without a tripod, so it's
a bit fuzzy)
Chinese
ringneck pheasants were everywhere. When you couldn't see them, you
could hear them cackling.
The
common wood pigeon is very
large compared to our pigeons. They
average
about 16" long, very nearly
the size of our ruffed grouse.
The
oyster catcher appears to be the same
bird as the ones on our
shores.
The Island of Fohr
Last modified 6/30/08
For
a small island, Fohr has an amazing abundance and variety of wildlife.
We saw dozens, if not hundreds, of rabbits, hares and pheasants. On a
single evening's bike ride, Chris and I spotted 22 deer.
We
spotted this hedgehog late one evening in
Nieblum while we
were biking home. I had to
put my bicycle wheel in front of
him while I
readied the camera. He then curled up in his
defensive
posture. Then when I moved away, he scrambled
for
the woods.
