Not all who wander are lost

Barred Owl

This owl is on the threatened list in New Jersey. I spotted him while hiking in the Great Swamp.

Eastern Bluebird

This guy was a bit cold on a bitter January day. Many New Jersey Bluebirds don't migrate in the winter.

White tail in velvet

This summer whitetail is going to have a nice rack in the fall.

Cicada

Also known as the 17-year locust, the cicada makes a lot of racket with it's buzzing in the summer. There are some every year, but every 17 years, there are millions of them and we're due in a couple of years.

Common Yellowthroat

This is a juvenile male, the adult male has a striking black mask.

Brown-headed Cowbird

Hunting bugs on the ground. The cowbird has a nasty habit of laying eggs in another bird's nest and destroying the other eggs.

Fowlers Toad

This guy looks a lot like the American Toad, but they are much less common in the northern part of New Jersey.

Killdeer

This bird was guarding it's nest of eggs.

Northern Ringneck

This snake is very secretive, living under logs and rocks.

Chinese Ringneck Pheasant

This guy made it through the hunting season at the Black River WMA.

Northern Water Snake swallowing a frog

I'm glad these guys aren't real big.

5-lined Skink

At a dock along the Savannah River.

Armadillo

I took this photo while hunting feral hogs in the Savannah GA National Wildlife Refuge.

Curious!

He came right up to my boot for a sniff. I guess he never smelled anything like that before.
